Welcome!

Me, 1D and Buttercup
I am the mom of two daughters, a wife, an English teacher, and a homeschool mom. Those are just some of my titles along with manager, mediator, chef, chauffeur and veterinarian (we have two dogs!). I love being a mom and teacher more than anything. So homeschooling was a way to bring those two passions together.
I started this blog to document my experience as a homeschool parent in hopes of helping other parents who may choose this homeschooling path. It is also my hope to share my knowledge and give other parents tools for making homeschool a fun place to be.
It is my experience that a lot of traditional teaching takes place while the child is sitting at a desk quietly listening to a teacher lecturing. Children don't seem encouraged to think for themselves, question what they are being taught and least of all play a role in choosing what they learn.
I believe in the opposite of all of that! I think a child should question everything, should choose what they want to learn (with a parent's guidance), and should always be encouraged to be innovative and creative thinkers.
A lot of my teaching involves sitting on the floor playing learning games or doing some other interactive activity. Don't get me wrong, I do the traditional teaching thing too. But my experience has taught me that when learning feels tedious or like a chore, kids are less likely to focus and thus less likely to retain what is being taught. So my objective is to make learning something kids want to do - because it's fun!
I chose the name Adventures of a Homeschool Mom because everyday in homeschool is an opportunity for adventure. We are always creating our own adventures whether in art, math or science.
I love reading comments and getting feedback. I also welcome new ideas that other homeschool parents would like to share!
Welcome to my adventure!
